Soft Robotic Actuation
Experiments in the creation of air-based actuators for macroscopic motion control. Welded air-tight chambers made from two-dimensional fabric or foils result in controllable and repeatable motion patterns when pressurised. The resultant actuators can be used to create multidimensional motion apparatuses.
Custom air pressure control systems and software have been developed, and multiple technologies for welding are being explored.
Ongoing research at Materiability Research Group at the University of Applied Sciences Anhalt.

Laser-based welding of nylon-TPU composite fabric to create air-tight pressure chambers. Two sheets of TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) coated nylon are secured to a planar surface. In a two-stage process, the sheets are first fused together, and the resultant air chamber is cut out of the remaining sheet material.
