HIMMEL UNTER BERLIN VOL.2

A spatial sound composition in dialogue with ropes and projection.
Coloured projections illuminate intersecting ropes in a dark installation space.

01 / Experience

A moving sound field inside a field of lines.

O.T. 1190 & Where we find the end combines Stefan Reiss’s rope-and-projection installation with my spatial sound work. It was presented at Himmel unter Berlin Vol. 2 in the cellars of a former steam engine factory.

Vertically stretched ropes of different thicknesses form an open spatial structure. Projected light appears across those lines, while six loudspeakers allow tones and sounds to move through the exhibition space.

02 / My contribution

Composing for the space around the image.

I composed the sound in Ableton Live and used Envelop for Live for spatialisation. I also installed the sound system as part of the collaboration with Stefan Reiss.

The six-loudspeaker arrangement made direction and movement available as compositional elements. Composition and spatialisation were developed together so that tones and sounds could move through the exhibition space around the projected rope structure.

03 / Spatial arrangement

Six loudspeakers in an open structure.

Ropes, projection and sound occupy a volume approximately four by three by eight metres. The ropes supply a physical arrangement for the image without closing the space into a solid screen.

The sound installation works across that volume. Its distributed sources make the placement of sound part of the project, alongside the placement and illumination of the ropes.

04 / Collaboration & presentation

An installation in the former factory cellars.

The group exhibition was curated by Clara and Sven Sauer and presented in Berlin in May–June 2023. The setting brings the work into an existing architectural space rather than a purpose-built concert environment.

The photographs document the visual states of O.T. 1190; the sound contribution, Where we find the end, forms the accompanying spatial composition. Their combination is the basis of this collaboration.
