About / Karsten Schuhl

A practice between
inquiry and making.

Karsten Schuhl

I’m Karsten Schuhl, a designer, artist and researcher working with sound, space, material and movement. I develop questions and ideas through making, using physical experiments to discover how an experience might take shape.

I am interested in how a work can draw us into its own world. Sound, visual detail and physical surroundings can create an atmosphere in which another setting or perspective becomes tangible—something we can spend time with, explore and sometimes become part of.

My practice includes self-initiated artworks, research, teaching, collaborative projects and services as a creative technologist and technical design lead. Across these contexts, I connect conceptual development with material and technical decisions, moving from early experiments to physical realisation.

My current focus is the artistic potential of spatial sound and its relationship to materials, movement and perception. Through Sonic Envelopes, I explore how listening might suggest a space beyond the room we see. Future experiments may take the form of installations or instruments, working with composed sound, environmental sound or both.
